Analyst, Rail Rates & Service

Plains Midstream Canada is currently seeking a highly motivated individual, with 3-7 years of experience, to fill a vacant position in our Rail Group.  While reporting directly to the Manager Rail Rates & Service Optimization, this role will be responsible for rail freight rate activities.  The successful candidate will be required to interact daily with multiple internal groups (Commercial, Rail Operations, Business Development, etc.) as well as external agencies and railroads. 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead daily ad hoc negotiation of rail freight rates with railroads on behalf of the business while working closely with business functions across multiple commodities to ensure consistent messaging and a single face to the railroads is maintained;
  • Maintain database of all rail freight rate quotes, published rates and contracts;
  • Identify and execute on commercial opportunities to drive business strategy;
  • Develop and maintain monthly rail metrics scorecard tracking rail spend, rate history, pricing expectations;
  • Develop in depth knowledge of rail markets via direct discussions with railroads, commercial, operations and other external parties as necessary.
  • Have intimate knowledge of Class 1 and Short Line Rail tariffs, rules and service-level arrangements;
  • Lead cost saving initiatives with rail scheduling groups to manage costs and mitigate risk for demurrage, switching efficiency, and key supply chain issues;
  • Maintain rail freight rate values in Right Angle system;
  • Continually identifying areas of improvements, documenting potential efficiencies and participating in process improvement opportunities;
  • Ad hoc strategic assignments and reporting as required

Qualifications:

  • Minimum University Degree in business or related field with 3-7 years’ relevant experience;
  • Strong commercial, analytical and problem solving skills;
  • In depth rail industry knowledge that can be leveraged and translated into market based intel;
  • Must have a high level of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Enjoys working with multiple priorities and tasks in a fast paced environment;
  • Ability to cultivate, foster and influence productive business relationships with third-parties;
  • Capability to multi-task, self-motivate and prioritize in a high-demand and changing business environment;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and respond accordingly to critical deadlines;
  • Goal oriented and able to contribute as a team player;
  • Advanced computer skills, specifically Microsoft Excel;
  • Midstream commercial experience considered an asset;
  • Prior railroad experience considered an asset;
  • Right Angle experience considered an asset
